Belly dancing techniques

Belly dancing is not new, by any stretch of the imagination. But it is gaining new popularity in America and other Western countries. This is due in part to our ever-growing need for a connection to the past and something culturally concrete, our constant desire to live a healthier lifestyle, and our innate longings for artistic expression. Belly dancing can satisfy so many of our needs, it is a great form of exercise, it is fun and expressive, and it has ancient cultural ties. If you are looking for an activity that can truly enrich your life, then belly dancing is the perfect solution. Let us help you get started on your belly dancing path with a few basic belly dancing techniques.

Belly dancing techniques do not have to be difficult. In fact, many belly dancing moves are quite natural for the feminine figure. You might have been using belly dancing techniques for years without even knowing it, when you make love, waltz with a special partner, walk by someone you fancy, play with your children, let loose on the club dance floor, or simply check a new dress in a department store three-way mirror. Belly dancing is as old as some of the first civilizations and cultural groups, and really, it’s no wonder. Belly dancing techniques are practically inborn.

Although the word “belly” is the body part used to describe this particular form of dancing, belly dancing techniques really start with the hips. Most basic belly dancing techniques include some form of hip movement, which in turn, will often make the belly dance. If you are just learning belly dancing techniques, then it is a good idea to stand in front of a mirror, in a hip-hugging skirt with your midriff showing, and practice popping your hip up and down. Try it on the right side, then the left side, and then try alternating the moves. You can also experiment with the hip shimmy, which is moving your hips back and forth, parallel to the ground. These are the basic hip moves that will get you started and allow you to move onto more advanced bally dancing techniques with ease.

Once you have mastered the hip movements, you are ready for more advanced belly dancing techniques. The shoulders and chest really come into play in many forms of belly dancing, and these moves are similar to the hip movements that you have already practiced. The shoulder or chest shimmy is a great addition to the hip shimmy, and the moves can be done alternately or with other techniques. The ribcage circle is also a great move, and although it can be difficult to learn, it is quite impressive when performed. The idea behind the ribcage circle is to keep the rest of your body still while you move your ribcage in a circular motion parallel to the floor. You can do a similar move with your hips, neck and head as well.
