Belly dancing for beginners

As a beginner to belly dancing, you are probably starting to seek knowledge about your new pass-time. Belly dancing is an ancient dance that first began in the Middle East. It has mystified many people throughout the ages, and captured the hearts of many. While the birthplace of all belly dancing isn’t completely certain, we know that it was perfected and fine-tuned within the Middle Eastern countries. The countries mostly associated with this hypnotic dance is Turkey, Arabia, and Egypt. Of where belly dancing began to spread to the western world.

However it didn’t make it’s way to western civilization until eighteen ninety three. Where a group of Syrian belly dancers first introduced it in the United States at the Chicago World’s Fair. Despite the initial shock of the dance, belly dancing took the United states by storm. Becoming one of the most popular dances to reach modern times.

It’s popularity has grown so much that you can find classes anywhere in the world. It is common for many gyms to offer it as a form of fitness. Mostly because it’s power to isolate and tone muscle groups. All belly dancing utilizes several different movements (or shimmies), that focus on isolating one part of the body. While one part of the body will remain stationary, others move independently in hypnotic patterns; all seeming to weave together as if the dance were in of itself a fabric to be woven.

Belly dancing has always been a means for both women and men to show their sensuality through dance. While it is more popular with females, it isn’t uncommon to have a male participating in this great art form.
Typically you will find that most belly dancers will be clad from head-to-toe in sheer fabric, however; most of the time accentuated by the intimate feel of being bare-foot. Which is meant to express a connection between the dancer and mother earth; along with the dancer’s body itself.

Once you have decided to become a part of the belly dancing tradition, you might be confused of where to start. First I might suggest purchasing a couple dvd’s to help you learn the basics, however they cannot replace the method of being taught by peers. For this reason you should look up local listings of belly dancing classes or a local group that would be willing to teach you the art form.

During your first couple of lessons either at home or with a group, you will begin to learn a few of the most important movements. The first being the shimmy. The shimmy is to move your hips slightly from left to right, focusing on the delicate movement of your core. Remember that you aren’t doing a pelvic thrust, it should be a side-to-side movement of your hips. While this is an easy movement all on it’s own, you will begin to layer movements of your body with the classic shimmy. For this reason it is imperative that you have it down before moving on to the next step.

The next movement that your group or dvd will begin to focus on is the hip circle. It is exactly as it sounds, a circle traced with your hip. First relax your shoulders, placing your arms out at your sides. All while you slide your hips all the way to the left; arching your hips forward. Bend your knees slightly a you pull your shoulders back. Now, you will arch your hips to the right and the rear; bringing your shoulders forward. While it seems to be complicated, once you have been shown this step it becomes more and more simple.

The last basic movement in belly dancing is the hip lift. This move is used to accent the movement and rhythm of the dance. With weight placed on one foot, you will lift slightly with the other foot. Remember that you should not lock the supporting leg, as it can give out easily. Make sure that your weight is evenly distributed between foot and heel; allowing the hip to be worked into a neutral position. At level with the other hip or slightly beneath. Pull your tail bone back and the pelvic bone upward; so that the hips are level from front to back. This of course will be explained in greater detail on a dvd or with your class instructor.

Last but not least, you should begin to look into a costume for your performances. Remember, for any beginner it should be kept simple. Keeping any beading or coins to a minimum as they can tend to interfere with the learning process. However, once you have learned all of the basic steps your teacher will ask that you begin to work with props such as scarves. Learn at your own pace, and remember to enjoy your belly dancing!
