Can I use regular polish over shellac polish?

The short answer is yes, but there are a few simple guidelines you must follow in order to do this…

What exactly is shellac?
Shellac, also known as soak off gel nail polish, is a new hybrid nail polish that promises some really great results. These results include a mirror finish, no chipping, 14 day wear, fast dry time, healthy nails, and no smudges. Shellac is able to do all of these things and more by wet setting the nails with a special UV Lamp. The lamp seals the nail polish permanently until you are ready to remove it, which is done by soaking.

Where can I get shellac nail polish?
Because of the UV lamp’s hefty pricetag, most people opt to get the shellac treatment done at the nail salon. However, there are plenty of options for the “do it yourselfers” out there. If you are willing to spend about $165 on the UV lamp and about $15 for shellac nail polish, you can get started with shellac the minute it comes to your door. Just order the shellac polish, top coat, base coat, lamp, and soak off wraps. The two soak off nail polish brands I recommend are CND Cosmetics Shellac and Gelish Soak Off Gel Nail Polish. Both CND and Gelish have their own lamps, but you can also get a generic lamp from Amazon too.

Can I Use Regular Nail Polish Over Shellac?
Yes, but to take it off you must use a nail polish remover that is acetone free, otherwise you’ll end up ruining both applications. Even though you can put regular nail polish over shellac, don’t ever put shellac over regular nail polish – It won’t cure right. Although, I have heard about some people successfully experimenting with the “shellac sandwich,” which entails shellac UV top and base coats with a regular nail polish of choice in between. But the verdict is still out on that one…..
