Don’t get your girlfriend’s name tattooed on you. Much more so than the institution of marriage, tattoos mean it when they say, ‘til death do us part.’ That’s why we don’t advise getting a girlfriend’s name tattooed on you. How many times do we have to remind you that ink is permanent? And based on your dating patterns, there’s a very good chance she’s only a rental.
No male tramp stamps. There is no acceptable tattoo for a male to get above his, well, crack. On women, that’s a different story. For men, however, we universally agree that male tramp-stamps are a no-no.
Avoid cliché. It seems simple, but getting a barbed wire armband, an anchor, a tribal design, a cartoon character, or a Chinese symbol is a no-no. They aren’t original and, to be honest, they’re corny. We wouldn’t advise getting a face tattoo either, but at least it’s a somewhat original idea. Just remember though, Mike Tyson has one, so it may not be the best idea.
Always do your research. Make sure you do your research on the tattoo parlor you plan on getting inked up at. And it’s not only for health purposes. Think about pricing! There’s also nothing more worrisome than getting an infection or a bloodborne disease from a tattoo artist who cuts corners and overcharges you.
Take a night and think it over. There’s nothing worse than getting a crappy tattoo on a whim. Like for example, during a heavy night of drinking. Make sure your tattoo idea didn’t come 10 beers in. Think it over because, well that naked mermaid you got on your left ass cheek is now permanent buddy.
Be Original. This piece of advice is the most important in our book. Think about getting a tattoo that has a special meaning to you, and be original about it. If you want to get a common peace sign tattoo because it has some sort of special meaning to you, be original about it. It’s as simple as that.
